Physical & Verbal Agression

This can occur due to changes in physical and mental conditions also because of certain types of medication.  Staff must be aware it is not personal but due to a change in service user’s condition.

If there is a history of aggression, then the service user profile will be detailed in the care plan.

Action plan if there is an episode of aggression:

Record in daily record sheet and report to line manger

Line manager feedback to GP for advice

Inform care team that will be attending

Follow procedure

PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW IF CONFRONTED BY PHYSICAL OR VERBAL AGGRESSION

An incident report form is to be completed for any episodes of aggression.

If confronted with verbal aggression the following action should be taken:

  • Speak quietly
  • Ensure privacy
  • Ascertain cause
  • Get help
  • Record & report

If confronted with physical aggression the following action should be taken:

  • Keep out of range
  • Ascertain what has caused the episode
  • Withdraw from the situation if likelihood of reoccurrence
  • Report and record
  • Be aware of building and exit points
  • Do not get cornered
  • Know how to summon help
